Reunion Softball Tournament

Greetings To All,

The 5th annual baseball alumni softball tournament is in the books and once again experience, courage, mental toughness and sobriety proved to be the winning combination as the 1985'ers posted a 17-15 win over the boys of 2003 in the championship game.  Trailing by 9 runs in the 6th inning, the Scott Fairfield led charges refused to give up and put together a 12 run inning and then held off a furious charge by the 'young pups' in the 7th.  This was the 2nd championship for 1985 and they vowed to take on all-comers in 2009.  The day had it's highlights including:

  • Gold glove play in the infield by Brian Sanders (1999) at SS and Greg Fife(1989) at 3B.  That's right, Greg Fife.  He was heard to mutter, "Crosby who", after his last backhand stab.  Many on hand thought he was the 'larger version' (much larger) of Brooks Robinson.
  • A towering home run that dented the scoreboard by Frank Lo Nigro's brother-in-law (the bill will be forthcoming)
  • Steve Wholley (1985) once again making the trek out from Massachusetts.  Some people will do anything for a ring (or a free t-shirt).
  • Lunchtime ceremony honoring the 1989 CIF 5A champions.  Many memories, many friendships.
  • 1989 highlight tape at Lamppost Pizza Friday night.  The two most exciting plays in El Dorado history, Matt Luke's steal of home in Dodger Stadium to break a 0-0 tie and Phil Nevin's decapitation of the Lakewood catcher to win the semi-final game still send chills down my spine every time I see it.
And the lowlights:
  • 1985 jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the 1st inning vs. 1989, before a single out was recorded.  Rumor has it that Tim Murray was on the mound.  He left shortly thereafter, supposedly to attend his daughter's soccer game.  Suppose there was a message there?
  • 1989 again failing to win a game, going 0-2.
  • Those cocky 1999 guys, seemingly so invincible two years ago, are mere mortals after all.
It could not have been a better day. The temperature was in the low 80's, blue sky and a great time had by all. A special thanks goes out to the volunteers that help make this a special event. Also, thank you to the team captains. I know it takes time and effort to put your teams together.
It's always good to see the parents of the alumni players in attendance. It was good to see the Tomko family who drove up from San Diego. I look forward to next year and hopefully see some new faces and teams. You will not be disappointed.
Wishing you all a wonderful Holiday Season.
