Head Coach Matt Lucas has coached at El Dorado since 2007. He became head coach in 2013. Prior to becoming head coach, Matt served as varsity pitching coach for 5 years under Steve Gullotti and Dave Moore. Coach Lucas previously played under Coach Gullotti from 1993-1996.
After high school, Coach Lucas went on to play collegiate baseball at Cal State Los Angeles where he was a 2-time Academic All-American under the legendary John Herbold. Matt’s playing career led him to the Houston Astros organization, where he played in their farm system from 2000-2003. In 2005 Coach Lucas transitioned from player to coach, becoming the varsity assistant at Laguna Beach High School.
In 2006, Coach Lucas moved on to become the varsity pitching coach at Walnut High School but returned to his alma mater in 2007. Matt currently teaches AP Macroeconomics and US History at El Dorado. Coach Lucas and his wife Julie reside in Placentia with their daughter Abbey and son Matthew.
Coach Picou began coaching at El Dorado High School in 2005 and started as varsity assistant coach in 2010. Coach Picou is the varsity hitting and outfield coach and also assists Coach Lucas with scouting. Coach Picou played baseball at Alta Loma High School and graduated from Cal State Fullerton in 1999. He and his wife Colleen reside in Yorba Linda with their 4 children, Luke, Eleanor, James and Claire.
Pitching Coach Jim Kiefer began at El Dorado in 2015. He has coached at the high school level for more than 24 years, including 12 years as a head coach. Prior to arriving at El Dorado, Coach Kiefer served as the Head Baseball Coach at Costa Mesa High School for six seasons (2006-2011). In his time at Costa Mesa, Coach Kiefer led the Mustangs to 4 consecutive CIF Playoff Appearances and a league title in 2009. He also served as the Head Coach at Newport Harbor High School for six seasons (1996-2001). In addition to his stints as a head coach, Coach Kiefer has also served as an assistant at both Brea-Olinda High (1992-1996) and Servite High (2002-2003). Jim played two seasons collegiately at Rio Hondo College (1990) and Fullerton College (1991). He currently teaches at Costa Mesa High School and resides in Placentia with his wife, Heather and two Children, Dane and Halen.
Coach Rivera began with the Golden Hawks in 2019. He attended El Dorado from 2009-2013. Before deciding to join the hawks coaching staff, Chris was drafted in the 7th round of the 2013 MLB player draft by the St. Louis Cardinals. While playing in the Cardinals organization Chris played many positions including Shortstop, Third Base, Second Base, and finished his career catching at the Triple A level. Coach Rivera finished his playing career in the Atlantic league playing for the Road Warriors.
