Head Coach Matt Lucas has coached at El Dorado since 2007.  He became head coach in 2013.  Prior to becoming head coach, Matt served as varsity pitching coach for 5 years under Steve Gullotti and Dave Moore. Coach Lucas previously played under Coach Gullotti from 1993-1996.

After high school, Coach Lucas went on to play collegiate baseball at Cal State Los Angeles where he was a 2-time Academic All-American under the legendary John Herbold.  Matt’s playing career led him to the Houston Astros organization, where he played in their farm system from 2000-2003.  In 2005 Coach Lucas transitioned from player to coach, becoming the varsity assistant at Laguna Beach High School.

In 2006, Coach Lucas moved on to become the varsity pitching coach at Walnut High School but returned to his alma mater in 2007.  Under the leadership of Coach Lucas, the Hawks have won 2 league championships and have made the playoffs 8 times. Matt currently teaches AP Macroeconomics and US History at El Dorado.  Coach Lucas and his wife Julie reside in Placentia with their daughter Abbey and son Matthew.

Coach Alam began coaching at El Dorado in 2020 and 2024 is his second season as a varsity assistant. He primarily works as the hitting coach and assists with infield and outfield work. Alam previously was an outfielder at El Dorado playing under Dave Moore from 2011-2012 and then for Coach Matt Lucas from 2013-2014. Coach Jeff Picou was also his outfield and hitting coach during that time.

After high school, Coach Alam went on to play collegiate baseball spending two years at Mt. San Antonio College. He then transferred to Cal State Los Angeles and played his final two seasons under head coach, Vince Beringhele. During his time at Los Angeles, Alam played every position except catcher and finished his final year as an infielder earning second team all-conference honors.

Coach Pugh returns in 2024 as our Varsity Assistant Coach to Coach Lucas. Coach Pugh has been coaching at El Dorado since 2021. His previous coaching experience includes being the Head Coach of the Junior Varsity team where he focused on teaching players all aspects of the game including "small ball."

Pugh was a middle infielder at El Dorado under Coach Matt Lucas and Coach Jeff Picou from 2017 to 2020 and earned 1st Team All-League as a Junior before his Senior season was cut short due to the Covid-19 pandemic. After high school, Coach Pugh went on to play collegiate baseball at both Santa Ana and Fullerton College but decided to stop playing and begin coaching after battling multiple injuries.
